ROUNDTRIPS
LABUAN BAJO-LABUAN BAJO
Since last year (2023) more and more people choose to fly in and out via Labuan Bajo for several reasons.
First of all, since Covid prices for flights to/from Ende and Maumere have increased. Secondly sometimes people think Flores has one airport only. And the
third reason is because of the eruptions of the Lewotobi volcano in east Flores airports of Maumere, Ende and Bajawa were closed for a longer or shorter time
Despites these reasons a one way overlandtrip it still the best option, in particular for those with limited time. A one way trip can be done in 4 or 5 days. A roundtrip has always at least a few double stretches.
About flights.
Yes, indeed prices have been almost doubled since 2020 and since Maumere, Ende and Bajawa are almost mainly served by Wings Air (the only exception is 4
flights a week with NAM Air to/from Maumere) they apparently can manage flight prices as they like. On the other hand
we are talking about around 75 euro’s which might be beyond the budget of backpackers but the real victims are the local people ofcourse.
With a roundtrip you will loose at least 2 full days, so I still hope travelers choose for the one way overland trip.
Flores has 6 airports in fact. From east to west: Larantuka, Maumere, Ende, Bajawa, Ruteng and Labuan Bajo. The airport most used by tourists is Labuan Bajo, followed by Ende and Maumere. Kelimutu National Park is in between Ende and Maumere but more close to Ende.
And the last reason. Well, the Lewotobi won’t be erupting forever. Eruptions started last year in December so almost a year now. The heaviest eruptions were early November, 10 people lost their
lives, thousands of people are injured and homeless. It also disturbed (and still) flights in particular those to/from Maumere airport which is closed since early July because of volcanic
ashes.
I made 7 roundtrips which all start and end in Labuan Bajo. The classic and quickest route is 6 days, the longest 18 days. There are roundtrips via Riung, via Wae Rebo, via both Riung and Wae
Rebo and via Maumere with a loop around the north coast.
* Tip
For the programs of 10 and 18 days: if you spend 2 nights in Bajawa you also can
spend one night, preferably the second one in one of the traditional villages for example in Tololela which is, to my opinion one of the nicest villages. You can book this through your driver or
guide in Bajawa.
Other villages to stay the night are Belaraghi, Gurusina, Bena and Maghilewa.
However, you are free to change and compose your own schedule of course.
There are a lot of POI's in the programs and you certainly cannot do all of them. The good news is that you the same route twice, so if not possible on your way eastwards then maybe on your way
back to Labuan Bajo.
Unless you have specific wishes I would focus on the blue (most visited) and
yellow (less visited but certain worth it) coloured see's and do's.
And to make it more difficult: it's not even all :-)
